Pokémon Go - I won't say that Pokémon Go will remain the same

Players can expect the games, apps, services and events they know and love to continue to receive continued investment from Scopely, powered by the same teams that have always created these experiences.

“As it’s always important to me and our entire game team that our community understands and is excited about the long-term vision for this game, I wanted to share why I believe a partnership with Scopely will be a positive step for all of you and the future of the game,” said Wu, who was an original engineer on the Pokémon Go codebase and was there for its grand launch. Scopely expressed deep admiration for this community and our team. “I am confident that Pokémon Go will flourish even more as part of Scopely, not just in its second decade, but for many years to come, under the mission of discovering Pokémon in the real world and inspiring people to explore together,” Wu continued. “Our new partnership, along with our decade-long partnership with The Pokémon Company, means we can continue this long-term focus. Scopely believes wholeheartedly in our mission and ongoing goal of creating the best possible Pokémon Go experience.”

“The entire Pokémon Go team is standing together through this partnership. The same people who have guided and built the game for years will continue to do what we love. We're always adding to the game - Raid Battles, friends, Go Battle League, Routes, Dynamax/Gigantamax, and of course Pokémon Go Fest and our live events - which I hope to continue doing for many years to come. Scopely empowers your game teams as autonomous groups to pursue the roadmaps they are inspired to follow and what each team believes is best for the player experience. This approach is extremely appealing to us at Niantic Games. I spoke with several game leaders at Scopely who gave me great confidence in how the company allows each game to develop independently and thrive creatively.

We will join a broader organization dedicated to games. I believe Pokémon Go can continue to thrive with Scopely’s long-term, exclusive focus on game creation. Scopely’s status as a privately held company also means we can prioritize what’s best for you, our Coaches, in the long term. We believe that prioritizing short-term gains at the expense of our long-term mission would be counterproductive and self-defeating. Every interaction I’ve had with Scopely leaders has reinforced that we are in complete agreement that Pokémon Go’s scale, longevity, and most importantly, real-world community make it truly special. We are united to protect this.

“With Scopely’s full commitment, expertise, and resources, we will make Pokémon Go the best it can be – with incredible battles for thousands of Trainers at once in our live events and new ways to connect with your friends and community, all while remaining focused on the excitement and experience of discovering Pokémon in the real world.” We have invested in empowering thousands of Community Leaders and Ambassadors who bring millions of Trainers together to play in the real world, and Scopely wholeheartedly agrees that this highly-admired program will be a priority for us to invest in together. The real-world community that loves Pokémon Go will continue to be our guiding light in everything we do.

“Our partners at The Pokémon Company have always been instrumental in how we’ve built this game together, starting with the physics of the first Poké Ball throw that we hand-tuned together. I’m incredibly grateful for their daily wisdom, guidance, and careful stewardship of our shared vision for discovering Pokémon in the real world, and I’m thrilled that our partnership with The Pokémon Company will continue as it has for the past decade. I won’t say Pokémon Go will stay the same, because it’s always been a work in progress. But how we created and evolved it will remain the same, and I hope we can make the experience even better for all of you.”

Astroplayroom

For the longest time, the words “bundled software” was almost unanimously code for “This is probably pretty naff”. You remember Alex Kidd on the Master System? I think we can all admit at this point that it wasn’t a very good game, but it came bundled, so everyone played it. Then Wii Sports came along and changed the game. You could hand your Wii remote to your nan, and she knew how to go bowling. It prompted the system to sell gangbusters, and would go on to be one of the biggest selling games of all time thanks to its “free with console” status. While it’s unlikely that Astro’s Playroom will have your elderly relatives clamouring for another go on “That game station box thing”, Astro’s playroom is absolutely the piece of bundled software that helps show off the shiny new toy you’re about to put down £450 for, and it does so in some ways that I don’t think anyone was expecting. Astro is probably going to be a character that some people don’t recognise. A fleshed out version of o...
