You Don't Want To Miss Out On River City Girls
There's a lot of games coming out right now, which makes it easy to miss some of the smaller but excellent ones like River City Girls on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
The annual onslaught of fall season releases is fast approaching, but there are already a bunch of games coming out to play. With the likes of Astral Chain, Control, and Gears 5 out now, and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Borderlands 3 coming soon after, it can be difficult to keep track of the smaller indie releases. One game you may have missed is River City Girls.
If River City Girls managed to slip under your radar, then we're here to tell you that you should consider picking it up. In the above video, GameSpot video producer Jean-Luc Seipke and video publisher Ben Janca play through the first few sections of the side-scrolling beat-em-up while explaining what makes the game so good.
As a follow-up to River City Ransom, River City Girls stars Kyoko and Misako, the girlfriends of protagonists Kunio and Riki from the original game. The two high school boys have been kidnapped, and it's up to their sweethearts to save them. Developed by WayForward, River City Girls' fighting mechanics are responsive and help encourage pulling off cool-looking combos. Their creation was overseen by Arc System Works, the same studio behind Dragon Ball FighterZ and BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle.
River City Girls features an old-school pixelated style throughout, however, cutscenes play out as either manga panels or anime-like cutscenes--both of which are fully voiced. More than a few well-known online personalities and notable talents from the anime industry voice the diverse cast of personable characters. The music might be the best part of the game, though, featuring a phenomenal collection of catchy electronic tracks and excellent lyrical synthpop performances. There's a remarkable amount of talent that's been poured into River City Girls' production and it translates into one of the better September releases this year.
River City Girls is available for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Limited edition physical editions of the Switch and PS4 versions are available via Limited Run Games.
